An offsite backup (also known as a remote backup) is a means of storing a copy of your valuable data on a backup device which is located in a separate geographical location.

This could be a separate office you already have or in a central secure location such as a Data centre.

In the event of a disaster such as theft or fire, you can rest assured that your key data is safely held elsewhere, allowing you to rebuild your business!

Most fire proof safes offer a level of protection against fire damage for a relatively short period of time – normally 1 – 2 hours depending on design and quality. If your building suffers a major fire that takes a while to be discovered or put out it could be too late for the computer media that was being stored. Most companies have their ‘core’ data (e.g. accounts) that is business critical, without which the business could not run, then there is the ‘associated data’ that has been collected over a period of time. By only taking the ‘core’ data offsite your possible data loss liability has been greatly reduced. However it is still possible to back up your entire system.

The initial backup process can take some time, because a full copy of the data must be encrypted, compressed and copied to the data centres. Further daily backups are significantly faster because file changes only are transmitted. These changes are typically at a 'block' level within a file i.e. if a change is made to a previously backed up document, only the change to that section is sent, not the whole document.
